Side note: This bug was climbing up my window by my kitchen sink the other day. See below. BTW, I have never seen these giant, black grasshoppers before we moved into this house.
My grandparents always had them at their house off of Hoo Shoo Too. My MawMaw would always take them off the plants and step on them...they're not good for your flowerbeds. I've seen a couple around our house.
Do you see the green plant in the background of your second picture? We have one of those in our backyard. We also have a large black critter that lives near it also....YUCK.
My brother and his wife just moved into their "dream" house, and their neighborhood is full of these big black grasshoppers. My sister in law is so afraid to go out the door if there is one in sight! Yuck!

Yikes! That is a big one. Wait till you see what I found in my yard today! I'll post it in a few hours!
Yuck!! Glad it was at your house and not mine. Aaron probably would have loved it, but I would have screamed. :0)
Well, we have seen Georgia Thumper which are HUGE, but not big black ones like that.

That's HUGE!!! Icky, ick!
That's HUGE!!! Have your boys caught one yet? Ya know, old plastic peanut butter jars make great "critter cages."
