Rob bought a stick of sugar cane the other day so he could let us taste what sugar taste like in its natural state. The boys knew it was sitting in the garage and kept waiting for daddy to get it out so one night last week daddy said it was time. The children gathered around while dad got his knife and started getting it ready. I had to nurse Asa so Ian was the photographer for the evening.
Here’s Rob trimming the sugar cane and slicing it into chunks for the kids to chew on and swallow the juice.
Cai was posing with part of the sugar cane.
To be fair for the children since I post pictures of them all of the time, I thought I would include a couple of silly pics of myself trying the cane. It really wasn’t that bad. I just kept chewing till there was only the flesh left from the cane and then Rob came over with the garbage can for me to spit it out. Most of the kids enjoyed it while some didn’t want to try it again. Emma would just put it in her mouth and then go straight to the garbage can and spit it out without chewing it at all.
Here are some pictures of the mess on the island when he was finished.
Rob’s grandfather used to have 3 acres gardens with some sugar cane, corn, potatoes, purple hull peas, tomatoes, black-eyed peas, okra, radishes, carrots, water melon, cantaloupe, honey dew, pears, apples, peaches, butter beans, cucumbers, squash, and more. He said he would sit and chew on sugar cane when he was boy so he wanted the kids to experience it too.
Daddy is always looking for an opportunity to teach the kids something. Have I ever told you that I love this man!!! (I think I have but you’ll hear it again!!)
Have you ever chewed on sugar cane?

Yep, at Dollywood.
P.S. the above comment is spam.
Oh yes. I have tried it. We used to get it often when we would travel to Texas. I loved it as a child, but couldn't tell you if I still would like it or not. Guess I need to try it again.
I love the silly pictures of you and always multi-tasking :-) Aren't Papa's the greatest~ You are blessed.

Fun for the children!
We tried it in Hawaii. It tasted like grass to me. Not that I have eaten grass, but the smell and celery texture made me think I was eating grass. I didn't see what the draw was.
Oh what fun! I've never even seen sugar cane! Ian did a great job with the photos!!
How fun!
One of the things we didn't do while traveling, even though it was on our list. Ah, well, we'll just have to drive through Louisiana again.....btw. quite a bit of snow here and it is FREEZING cold! Jana is not liking it much:-)
I can remember liking it whenever I was younger....don't care for it now. I think it is a "texture" thing.
